Westchester County H-MRF (Valhalla) Free
The county's Household Material Recovery Facility accepts electronic waste from Westchester residents year-round, including computers and peripherals, televisions, gaming devices, mobile devices, stereo equipment, wiring and cabling. Visits are by appointment only. Book online or through the Recycling HelpLine, and bring a current government-issued photo ID. The county says fees may apply only to residents of Somers, North Salem, Lewisboro, Pound Ridge, Bedford, North Castle and New Castle; Yonkers isn't on that list. Manufacturer take-back and retailers Varies
New York's Electronic Equipment Recycling and Reuse Act requires manufacturers to offer free, convenient recycling to individuals and businesses with fewer than 50 full-time employees. NYSDEC lists registered manufacturers and their programs. Some retailers, such as Best Buy, also take electronics. NYSDEC says sites not affiliated with a manufacturer program may charge, so call before you go.

Don't do this
- Don't put computers, monitors, printers or TVs out with your regular garbage.
- Don't take electronics to the Recycling Center in a rented or commercial vehicle. The city doesn't allow them.
- Wipe or remove hard drives before you recycle a computer.
Or pay someone to haul it
If you can't get it to a drop-off site, or can't wait for city pickup, a junk-removal service can take it from inside your home. Prices depend on the company, your location and the size of the load, so get a quote first. Ask whether they recycle or donate items and whether they follow Yonkers's rules, especially for electronics and paint. Another option is to hire moving helpers by the hour: they do the lifting, and with a truck they can drive it to a drop-off site. They move it where you tell them, so pick a legal destination from this guide.
