Your options in Yonkers

Weekly curbside bulk pickup Free

The city collects non-metal bulk items every week from private homes and buildings with six units or less. Mattresses and box springs count as non-metal bulk, along with tables, chairs, couches and rugs. Put one item at the curb for your second scheduled collection day of the week. The city's guides say bulk isn't collected during holiday weeks. City code requires garbage and bulk to go out no earlier than sundown the evening before pickup, and the city's page warns of a fine of up to $1,500. The city doesn't list a fee for bulk pickup, and its pages don't say whether a mattress must be bagged, so check with the city if you're unsure.

Don't do this

  • Don't put a mattress out before sundown the evening before your pickup. The city warns of fines up to $1,500.
  • Don't put out more than one non-metal bulk item a week, and skip holiday weeks.
  • Don't put a metal bed frame out with non-metal bulk. Call 914-377-HELP for an appointment.

Or pay someone to haul it

If you can't get it to a drop-off site, or can't wait for city pickup, a junk-removal service can take it from inside your home. Prices depend on the company, your location and the size of the load, so get a quote first. Ask whether they recycle or donate items and whether they follow Yonkers's rules, especially for electronics and paint. Another option is to hire moving helpers by the hour: they do the lifting, and with a truck they can drive it to a drop-off site. They move it where you tell them, so pick a legal destination from this guide.
