How to Get Rid of Old Computers, Laptops & Electronics in Wayne, NJ

✓ Last verified October 21, 2026 against official Wayne, New Jersey and retailer sources. See sources.

Quick answer

  • Computers, monitors, laptops, tablets, desktop printers and fax machines are covered electronic devices. New Jersey bans them from the trash, and Wayne doesn't collect electronics curbside.
  • Wayne residents can drop electronics at the Recycling Center, 201 Dey Road. The 2026 brochure lists computers, printers, copiers, radios, audio equipment and DVD players.
  • The brochure and NJDEP's January 2026 list say the center is open 7 days, 8 a.m.–3 p.m.; the township site lists weekdays only. Call 973-694-1800 ext. 3315.
  • Lithium batteries go to household hazardous waste events, not the trash, per the township.

Manufacturer mail-back Check with city

Covered-device manufacturers must offer free recycling in New Jersey, often by mail-back or at partner sites, and approved sites can't charge consumers or businesses with fewer than 50 full-time employees. Check your brand's program or ask NJDEP's E-Waste Unit (609-984-3438, ecycle@dep.nj.gov).

Don't do this

  • Don't put computers, monitors or printers out with garbage or bulk. Wayne's brochure lists electronics as not accepted curbside.
  • Don't put lithium batteries in the trash. Wayne sends them to household hazardous waste events.
  • Don't bring electronics to a Passaic County household hazardous waste day. The county lists them as unacceptable.
  • Wipe or remove hard drives before you recycle a computer.

Or pay someone to haul it

If you can't get it to a drop-off site, or can't wait for city pickup, a junk-removal service can take it from inside your home. Prices depend on the company, your location and the size of the load, so get a quote first. Ask whether they recycle or donate items and whether they follow Wayne's rules, especially for electronics and paint.
